South America Beach Holidays

Most people think of Brazil if it comes to beach holidays in South America, but many of the other South American countries have equally good beaches.

Many of the most beautiful and most exciting beaches in the world are to be found around the coasts of South America. From Venezuela to Argentina this continent is an essential beach-lovers` destination, with a choice of coastlines washed by the South Atlantic, South Pacific or Caribbean to choose from.

Brazil has a lot to offer when it comes to beach holidays. Florianópolis Island, about an hours flight south of São Paulo has over 42 breathtaking beaches. Praia Mole is the most popular one, surrounded by green mountains. Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago 350 km off the north-east coast of Brazil. It is a place of stunning beauty and finding a nice beach is an easy task. Because tourist numbers are strictly monitored, it is easy to spot turtles, octopuses and a great number of different fish. At the end of the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches in Rio de Janeiro you find Arpoador beach, favourite with surfers, body surfers and local bathers. Arpoador beach is lit up at night. The 1,100 km coastline of the state of Bahia is speckled with spectacular beaches, among these Taipus de Fora on the Maraú Peninsula. One of Brazil's best beaches is on a river at the heart of the Amazon forest. Around 30 km from the rainforest city of Santarem, Alter do Chao is the jungle's answer to the Caribbean.

As a South American country with a Caribbean coast, Venezuela is uniquely blessed. There is almost every kind of beach to choose from: small palm-fringed bays
, long sweeps of soft sand, and Los Roques - Caribbean's only coral archipelago. Margarita Island is Venezuela's tourist island. Hotels, resort complexes, bars, nightclubs, free-port shopping, water sports etc. Tacarigua is a wide beach beyond a lagoon, secluded but not far from the capital, Caracas. The Paria Peninsula has idyllic beaches and chocolate farms! Choroni is a popular beach village below the mountains of Henri Pittier national park. It is lively at week-ends, quiet during the week.

Atacames in Ecuador is a small resort on the Pacific coast and something of a party town, it has the most popular beach in the country. It is the kind of place to relax all day and party all night. But if you feel like something a little quieter, nearby is the ecological reserve of Playa Escondida, with pristine beaches for the family.

At Santa Marta in Colombia, located between the towering peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world`s highest coastal mountain range and the blue Caribbean, lies this charming resort town in a region noted for its variety of wildlife and also its sites of historical and cultural importance.

In Uruguay, a popular destination with Argentinians and Brazilians for years has been Punta del Este. In recent years, Americans, Canadians and Europeans have begun to discover the delights of this unique resort. Unspoiled beaches that stretch for miles, beautiful lakes and countryside, classy restaurants, bars and people.

The Atlantic coast is full of holiday resorts where Argentines, especially the people from Buenos Aires, like to spend the summer. Forest, sand dunes, fishing places, beaches, casinos, and nightlife are the principal attractions of well-known places such as San Clemente del Tuyú, Santa Teresita, San Bernardo, Pinamar, Cariló, Villa Gesell, Miramar, Necochea and Mar del Plata - a city with half a million inhabitants and a main fishing port on the Argentine coast.

In Chile, Valparaiso, and particularly Vina del Mar, is the most important tourist area in the country and one of the most attractive of its kind in South America. Between Los Molles in the North and Santo Domingo in the South, the coastline of the Valparaiso region is scattered with beaches which are among the most popular in the country due to their varied infrastructure and proximity to the capital (120 km. from Santiago). Exclusive seaside resorts are those of Zapallar and Cachagua which mix the beauty of the landscape with the architectonic tradition in Zapallar and the harmony of stile in Cachagua. Maitencillo stands out for its restaurants which are highly visited throughout the year by gourmets who enjoy dishes prepared with fish.

With some of the world`s greatest beach holidays available in South America, there has never been greater interest in visiting this magnificent continent.
