Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions and the province of Lima, the capital. Each region has an elected government composing of a president and a council. These governments are primarily engaged with regional development. The peruvian population, estimated at 28 million, is multiethnic. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. Peru is a developing country. In 2006 its per capita income was USD 3,374, 39.3% of its total population is poor, including 13.7% that is extremely poor. The currency is Nuevo Sol (PEN). Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. In 1821 Peru achieved independence. Peru's geografic varies from the plains of the Pacific coast to the peaks of the Andes mountains and the tropical forest of the Amazon Basin. Unlike other equatorial countries, Peru does not have an exclusively tropical climate; the influence of the Andes and the Humbolt Current causes great climatic diversity within the country.
